Miss Spain Comes Out As Lesbian: Patricia Yurena Rodriguez Reveals Sexual Orientation With Steamy Photo

Miss Spain Comes Out As Lesbian

Miss Spain just became the first openly lesbian national beauty queen, and she shared her sexual orientation with the world in a rather romantic way.

According to The Mirror, Patricia Yurena Rodríguez Alonso won the Miss Spain title in 2008 and 2013. She recently decided to reveal that she’s in a lesbian relationship by sharing an intimate Instagram photo of herself in bed with girlfriend Vansea Cortes. Rodriguez simply captioned the sweet snap, “Romeo and Juliet.”

Perhaps Miss Spain’s words were a reference to the way many people treat LGBTQ couples — just like Romeo and Juliet, Patricia and Vansea have to listen to people tell them that they shouldn’t be together. However, Patricia Rodriguez’s photo received plenty of positive responses from those offering their congratulations and applauding her decision to come out.

The 24-year-old beauty queen later thanked her supporters on Instagram, and she posted another photo of herself and her DJ girlfriend:

“I published quite naturally and impulsively. I appreciate the outpouring of support and even more to rejoice in my happiness. Thank you!!”

One of Rodriguez’s many supporters was María Jesús Matthei, Miss Universe Chile 2013. She posted a few photos of herself and Patricia hanging out at the Miss Universe competition, and she called her pageant pal “charming, beautiful, and admirably brave.”

Patricia Rodriguez was the runner-up in 2013′s Miss Universe pageant, so the world was this close to having a lesbian Miss Universe. As The Inquisitr previously reported, the 2013 Miss Universe competition was held in Moscow, a location that caused controversy because of Russia’s law banning “homosexual propaganda.” However, the show was hosted by MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts, an openly gay man.

In addition to winning Miss Spain and coming in second at the Miss Universe pageant, Patricia Rodriguez finished in the top 15 at the 2008 Miss World pageant. She was too young to compete in the 2008 Miss Universe pageant due to a rule that all contestants must be 18 or older.

According to After Ellen, Djuan Keila Trent became the first former Miss America contestant to come out as lesbian earlier this year. Trent won the Miss Kentucky crown before competing in the 2010 Miss America pageant, and she struggled with her decision to come out. She wrote in a blog post:

“I have written and re-written and deleted and restarted this post more times than I care to share, and after all of that I have finally realized: “There ain’t nothin’ to it, but to do it.” So, here we go folks… I am queer.”

Djuan explained that she decided to come out now because of the current fight for gay rights taking place in Kentucky and other states.

Gay marriage is legal in Patricia Rodriguez’s home country, but Miss Spain hasn’t said anything about wedding bells just yet. What do you think of her decision to come out? Is it a good thing or are you sad that there aren’t more beauty queens who are out and proud while they’re actually competing?
