What The Heck Are Eye Boogers And Why Do You Have Them?

What are eye boogers and why do we get them?

SciShow, a crowdfunded YouTube science channel, took on this crusty issue in an episode posted online over the weekend. 

Turns out the “sand” or “sleep” in the corner of your eyes each morning is made up of a whole bunch of nasty things: mucus, dead skin cells, oil, dust and bacteria, host Michael Aranda explains in the clip above.

And while this junk is always hanging around your eye, blinking washes it away. Since you blink less when you sleep, it accumulates and when you wake up, you’ve got some eye boogers.
